Only allow transfers for Minority/Majority and from over-capacity schools to under-capacity schools.
This would save money by keeping kids in their neighborhoods.

What about for special programs, like the two-way dual language pilot? We love Becker for a million reasons, but DL was a big #1 for us…
This option would be counterproductive toward saving many schools on the list. But more importantly this would also be counterproductive to supporting excellence in schools through school choice. It would cut people out of innovative programs at schools like Becker. It would also be destructive for families trying to achieve a good work/life balance by having their kids in schools near their workplaces so they can be actively engaged in the school’s life.
The transfer program is a positive for AISD – it helps reduce enrollment at over-capacity schools as well as eliminate the need for transportation for transfer students as the burden of school transportation is on the parents/care givers.
The transfer program is a horrible boondoggle for AISD. Just because it’s popular doesn’t mean that it isn’t horribly costly in both monetary terms and social justice terms. The reason we have all these specialty schools is an attempt to prevent transfers out of neighborhood schools.
If the goal is to save neighborhood schools then we should end the transfer policy except as needed to ease overcrowding. Kids should go to their neighborhood schools.
If the goal is be convenient to parent’s work we should close all neighborhood schools and just build large suburban style schools around central Austin. That would allow for efficiencies in transit and cost savings for the schools.
